Task 1-
The definition of video installation is work produced in art form where there is moving imaginary for a visual and audio medium. This is presented in galleries, museums or exhibitions. The main idea for doing a video installation to combined the story lines of key elements so that the narrative connects with the audience and engages them for them to remember the story line. This is an abstract way of promoting the art work. The focus of this is for the viewers to experience the mood of the artist and feel the art in a classy way.

In the 1960's and 70's artists began to show their focus on the possibilities of moving images for a video art. Here are some examples. Video projections featured in the spatial installation appear on simple archetypal structures and their surrounding walls – not unlike the set for a contemporary theatre performance

This is showing natural life with the green and a women walking out of the water. By doing this in a video form will make it that the audience feel more calming and as if they are actually there looking at the scene moving and transforming over time. I feel as though the intentions from the artist was to make the installation more interesting and to engage the audience in the purpose of nature. I think that the last installation is in a shape of a house, the purpose of this is to show that nature also is a home to animals and the nature around, having a hidden meaning behind the art work and creating more meaning.

This is a way of showing the eye of someone in an interesting way, to make people think about the art work and make it look more creative by showing it on a video instillation. I feel as though the artist would of done it this way to show the moving eye in a circular shape to represent the eye itself, and show it looking out at the audience. This makes the production look more professional and placed in a beauty shop to promote the brand and show what they are trying to sell in a more arty form.

This is using different screens to shows an image which is merging together with different things round it to show a movement in time. This makes it look more interesting by having the screen going up and would show the artist in a different light and angle to other artists. The artist would of done this to also show the travel in time going "down the line". This makes it look as though the artist has a hidden meaning behind his work, and looks better than just having everything in a straight line, making the audience have to figure it out for themselves.
This is a good visual video instillation, the colours are so bright and vibrant. By doing it on a big screen like this will draw the audience in and make them focus on the story line and what is taking place. The artist would of change the colours to pink as it is an attractive colour, as this will draw people in and in some sense feeling warming. The work looks more artists with changing the colour of the grass and trees etc, and shows the artists feeling as a person, rather than a basic image.
|
This is a good demonstration of visual videos as it shows different sunsets. The different colours mix together well and shows a change of time, which is what the audience would enjoy. The artist would of put the work up on these projectors in a dark room so that the audience is able to get involved in the action and engage with it more.
New installations |
This is a big visual video of art a man looking down, as there is a water fountain there so it looks like the water is coming out of his mouth. This will make people laugh and get the artist more noticed by the public by having it in a big city. The artist would of done this as it is in some way entertaining, the action has a meaning to it and the projection relates to the water fall by it coming from his mouth. It shows the artists work off and what sort of character he is as a person.
|
This is showing a girl remove paint from herself using the technique of stop motion. This is putting art and media together and forming something interesting for the audience to enjoy and get engaged with.
|
This is of a women sat down still, but the audience will be able to see something move across her face and her blinking. This will be able to gather an emotion connection with the audience and would take alot of effort and control to make look realistic.
|
This is of a lighter being flickered and it is a clear image of the flame and fire being created. This is better than just a still picture as the audience can actually see the flame coming to life, and it looks more artistic.

Installations from history
This is how they used to produce their exhibitions on TV screens for people to see. They were very basic designs and didn't go into a lot of detail. The story line doesn't make much sense and in history they didn't have a lot of technology to work with to make it look better.
Another example would be the Zoopraziscope. This is the device that displayed motion pictures in the 1870's. This was created by Eadweard Muybridge which was considered the first movie projector. It is the rapid speed of moving images on a screen to make it look as though it is really moving.
|
Animation was a great way of showing off artists work in history, as the technology available was limited, it was done by creating on image which slowly shifts and making it into something that looks as though it is infact moving.

Examples of Artists-
- Douglas Gordon
- Matt Mullican
- David Hockney
Session 1-
Hollis Frampton- Nostalgia
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voMDL1TgTh4)
This is showing how Frampton work with the cinematic that was available at the time, and the structure he used was to show the dis junction between sound and image. It is a series of still images with a soundtrack in the background which has his over comments involved to show a series of different events that took place. As each of the photos get burned i would put this installation behind a massive picture of a moving flame and have it projected on a distorted wall. This will make it more interesting for the audience and the two things will bounce off eachother and make it look better. This would also make it look better as it would be the contrast of colour mixed with black and white, making it look more professional and like the artist put thought into it.
Andy Warhol- Empire
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sSsWj2HWk0
Andy Warhol created a 8 hour production of the empire state building, doing nothing. He didnt try to create anything fancy and let the audience see the transformation in lights over the eight hours. This was created on July 25th and 26th of July 1964. As not everyone in the world is lucky enough to see the Empire state building i would project this ontop of another massive building with no other buildings in the way, just looking out into the sky so the viewers would be able to imagine they are actually looking at the real thing. This would be shown at night time so that the projector would been seen in the air and that way, across the world everyone would be able to imagine that the empire state building was infront of them.
Sam Taylor-Wood- "David"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0UEuuYuNDo
This is a portrait of Beckham sleeping after a long day at training. It was shot in a single long take at only one angle. It is filmed to show the reverential and vulnerable images of the internationally known football player. I would put this in fashion retail shops on screen behind clothes. This will promote him and the clothing brand, to say that he could wear it. As the lighting in retail shops are bright it will show off Davids expression and what he looks like. It is a good way to get the artists work across as so many people will see it and it will also make the shop look more interesting by having moving images projected on the walls.

Different types of technology
Projectors and Screens-
Projectors can be installed anywhere on a wall, either a classroom, meeting rooms, training rooms or even your living room to get a big screen show. It is an enlarged way to show information or footage and means that the audience are able to see things closely and more in detail. |
TV monitor-
A TV monitor has many different formats to show off videos. The frame rate is faster and shows alot more detail with its progressive format. Monitors come in more flavours and have a larger panel to show off which is why it is different to a normal TV. This is a good way to show off footage as the quality is alot better and it almost looks 3D. |
Ipods, Ipads, Iphones-
Apple line of devices, a mobile phone that enables the audience to see productions, listen to music and take pictures to an advanced level. Ipods and Ipads arent considered to be tablets because of the smaller screen, but the software are all the same in advances levels and gives clear visuals for the audience. |
Artists
For example, an artist who's work i enjoy is Douglas Gordon. He uses projection screens to show uncomfortable imagery and a long period of time. His most famous piece of work was 24 Hour Psycho, in Glasgow 1996. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/24_Hour_Psycho) An art installation who cut down the film to two frames per second. He wanted to show off his skills in this production of time, and show a contrast between complicity and duplicity, with the recognition of darkness and light. It is a different take on the 1960 film and shows the important themes to the audience to keep them engaged and interested. The production is created to play on the audience mind and show them something that would give them a fright but make them want to continue watching. By cutting it down and projecting it it will keep the audience there and show them the key elements in an artistic manner. It is both generous and cruel and makes the audience think about their own life situations. He did this by projecting it onto wall in exhibitions with white back grounds. This makes the work stand out more and make people in a small area watch all the details without getting distracted by it.

Vito Acconci was an american designer, and an installation artist. One of his pieces was Seedbed. This was a mind messing piece of art work that was disturbing for the audience as it involved him in a tight gallery, masturbating whilst vocalizing into a loud speaker as people walked past. This was to show the interaction between the artist and the viewer. This is a weird idea which got alot of attention from the public and pushed him to be a famous artists. The video itself doesnt have any sexual content, but it merely suggested. Here is the footage that was avaible for the art work, and it was presented on a projector screen. Narrative and Non Narrative
Narrative writing tells a story, with either holding a fictional story line or a nonfictional one. This will always contain a plot and a purpose of the story that is being told. The narrative could be set in different forms, either a novel, a play, poetry, film scripts, or short stories.
